Martha Walters is the mother of Beef Walkerton and adoptive mother of Sal Walters. Unknowingly having her children switched, she and her husband John gained the unwelcome attention of the Head Alien. With the protection of SEMME and the Man in Black, they escaped him during several moves from town to town, changing her name to "Cindy" in the process in an attempt to throw them off the scene. This aggravated relations with Sal, even leading to physical violence. She was killed by the Head Alien during one such move.

The Head Alien would then repeatedly use a cassette recording of this event to goad Sal into reacting in a way he wanted.

Her body was later used as a bargaining chip by the Head Alien in order to get Sal to open the Martian Embassy, a move which failed because he was actually confronting Walky in an improvised wig. Switching plans, however, Head Alien attempted to force Walky to do it, but instead aggravated him to the extent that he crashed the tubes containing John and Martha's bodies on Head Alien, killing him and - inadvertently - Big Boss and causing Sal to shut down with remorse at seeing their dead bodies.

They were later buried properly, and Sal would visit their graves after recovering from a period of insanity, leaving her mother's jacket, which she had worn since Martha's death, on her grave. This jacket was picked up by Beef and given to the JFO. Penny Worthington would eventually use it in order to provoke Sal, much in the style of the Head Alien.
