History
Alan is actually an Alien in disguise as a human. He works with SEMME, and is a very rare good alien.
For most of the story, Alan is something of an enigma, and there are still unanswered questions. He seems to have some sort of prior relationship with The Cheese[1], and is believed to be the Man in Black known to both Joyce[2] and Sal[3]. (This was later confirmed by David Willis on the Nightstar forums[4].) It is also possible that he was the only one of the Head Alien's lackeys[5] to be present when Walky and Joyce first met.
Alan is largely a background figure until Year Zero, where he comes to the forefront due to being one of the only SEMME agents still conscious. He is held hostage by two of the Head Alien's flunkies, along with Professor Doc, to force Big Boss's hand. Once freed, he leads a mission with Jason, Joyce, and Walky to disable the Head Alien's mind-control device. When another of the Head Alien's flunkies destroys the SEMME-craft he was flying, he disappears, assumed dead, only to reemerge to train Walky later.
His next significant appearance occurs when Sal is threatening the city of Denver with the Power Booster Rod. It is here that he reveals himself as an Alien[6], explains his reasoning behind lying to Sal about her abductee status, and gets temporarily fired. This is also where a connection with The Cheese is first suggested; when The Cheese falls in battle, Alan uses an emergency telewarp activation to help him escape[7].
At one point, Alan is kidnapped by the Head Alien for questioning. It is unknown what he reveals at this time, though it is suggested that it includes the nature of the upcoming threat and his part in it[8]. Whether this information is what eventually allows the Head Alien to overtake The Cheese is currently unknown.
During the final battle, Alan is thrown by the Monkey Master toward The Cheese, and went intangible until he was "inside" it. He then returned to tangibility, forcefully ejecting the Head Alien from The Cheese, and destroying his control over the martians.[9].
Allegiance
Despite being SEMME staff, it is not clear if Alan's loyalty is entirely toward them. Though he seems more familiar with the situation than anyone else except The Cheese, he reveals the bare minimum of information he has to, even in the face of a crisis. Moreover, he has worked directly against SEMME's interests in a few instances, most notably when he activated an emergency telewarp[10] for The Cheese after he had been disabled by a direct hit from the Power Booster Rod. (Possible meanings of the voice code "choregus" have been debated, but nothing clear is obvious.) He also lied about Sal and Walky's abductee status [11], and is responsible for Jason being assigned to Squadron 128, despite reservations[12].
Abilities
Alan has extensive knowledge of the Aliens, Martians, SEMME technology, The Cheese, and a variety of other topics. His suit is capable of going intangible or simply shadowy. He has survived apparent death by falling off of a cliff[13], being blown up[14], and being stabbed in the chest with a sword[15].
Trivia
- In a previous project, the Alan character was named David Ressman, after one of the author's friends. It was changed to Alan for It's Walky! because Alan sounds more like "alien," and because there were already too many Davids in the universe.
- Alan's Alien nature is indicated in his second appearance, where arrows on an Alien poster appear to point to him[16]. This is one of two known instances[17] where the artist uses arrows as foreshadowing, leading readers to suspect almost any arrow pictured since.
