Is a Song Forever?
From Walkypedia!
|
Is a Song Forever? is the last chronological Roomies! story, featuring the graduation of Danny and Joe. Danny then got an internship in Colorado and continued to see Billie, whilst Joe moved to New Jersey.
Shortly afterward, Joe would be integrated into the main cast of It's Walky!, while Danny & Billie would become recurring characters there.
Storyline
Billie e-mails Walky with a progress update; little has happened other than Danny "getting weird", which she puts down to pre-graduation jitters - juxtaposed with Danny having chained himself to his room, yelling "They're not taking me alive!!!"
Later, Danny talks with Joe, not liking the idea of being a responsible post-college adult - Joe counters with the fact that Danny's been responsible since he was six. Later, in bed with Billie, she tries to find out what's bothering him, first by asking, then by strangling him, to no apparent success.
The next day, however, he unloads to Joe - knocking him off his feet by saying he thinks he'll have to propose to Billie. Joe, shocked, first asks if she's pregnant; and after receiving a negative answer asks what's the hurry - just because school ends... and he tails off, realising. He says that marrying her is a "monumentally bad idea", but Danny's worried about interning elsewhere while Billie's still at college.
Meanwhile, Howard asks Billie to go to class with him and take notes, as he's practically blind after having his pupils dilated. Somehow, he talks her into it, and they find seats in a lecture theatre - beside Mary. Billie tries to restrain herself, but can't help asking about Mary's baby - to which Mary reveals she aborted it. Billie, surprised, asks if that didn't conflict with her beliefs, and Mary says that, somehow, they didn't matter so much when you're personally experiencing them, and is finding herself cut off from people as a result of her actions. She then tries to apologise to Billie over what happened between them before, but Billie refuses to accept it and storms off, boasting about her actions to Danny. He's slightly disturbed by it, and suggests that Mary meant it - but Billie says that Mary had lied at Billie's expense, and would hate her until the day she died.
Later in the day, Joe tries on his graduation robes, and wonders aloud to Danny if he "could get chicks" in it.
The next morning, Danny refuses to get up, since that would inevitably lead to him leaving. Billie gets Joe, who has a hose full of water ready to force him out of bed.
Finally, at the graduation itself, they have to listen to a speech by Dan Quayle, then Sarah turns up to say congratulations. Billie and Danny are happy to see her, but Joe tries to sneak away, only for a kick from Sarah to reveal that getting "a chick" in the robe wasn't a joke, to Danny's embarrassment.
Sarah then goes off with Joe & Billie, while Danny is distracted by Mary, who wants to "say congrats while Billie's distracted". She apologises to him, and he says not to worry - he holds "a grudge like a wet fish", leading Mary to crack that "opposites do attract." After Mary asks how Danny & Billie are doing, he says almost perfect - apart from the fact they're going to be miles apart, so he's going to ask Billie to marry him, which makes Mary laugh.
He brings up the way Sal and him "fell apart" as soon as he went to college, and he's not letting it happen again. Mary counters that distance wasn't the reason, and guilting her out of college would just destroy them; before pointing out that life goes up and down, and trying to stop there from being any downs would "destroy everything you're 'saving' eventually," and that he needs to learn to let go.
Soon afterward, Billie comes to find him, and says that his mother was wondering where he was interning, and he says "that place in Colorado", since Indiana's so "flat and boring". Her agreement, saying that she can't wait until "We can get out of this place." cheers him up, while Mary smiles in the background. Noticing his improved demeanour, she asks if it was graduation that was depressing him then, and he says that he was mostly afraid of losing things he'd be leaving behind, putting a hand on her shoulder. She twigs, and quips that for a while she thought he might have been going impotent.
Later that evening, Danny and Joe argue over a DVD, when Danny suddenly realises that "Joe's leaving [him] too...", which annoys Joe. Joe's seeming relaxation over the deal in turn annoys Danny, in response to which Joe says he does care, but he knows it isn't the end, and that there are "bigger and better things ahead" - which Danny interprets as a reference to breasts on Joe's part.
Sitting on a fountain an hour before they're due to leave, Danny's still maudlin and annoying Joe, who says "nothing lasts forever", to which Danny depresses Joe by countering with the Olsen twins. However, as Billie tells Walky in another e-mail after she returns home, they get away okay, Danny to Colorado, and Joe to New Jersey. Noting that Walky's in Denver, she says she'll drop by to meet his friends and "alleged girlfriend" next time she visits Danny. Reading back the e-mail, Walky goes "Uh Oh" to that.
Meanwhile, with Billie having left him behind when getting away from Mary, Howard's still in the now-empty lecture theatre.

Is A Song Forever? is unusual in that it was never on itswalky.com. A short comic hosted by Keenspot, it was lost to time for a while. Thankfully, the archives were collected from The Web Archive, placed in a Photobucket and subsequently uploaded somewhere else.
