Dorothy Keener was the head of her high school class, which made her an odd target of David Walkerton's affection. He was a scatterbrained doofus who gave up on academics years ago, and she was destined to be valedictorian. She liked him, she really did, but she knew he had no future if he didn't start growing up. She gave him an ultimatum: show her he's serious about studying, and maybe they can hit it off.
In this universe, Walky was discouraged, he never really talked to her again, and he went on to become Professor Doc's lab boy.
But in another, he answered her challenge, went through med school, and the two got married.
