Dina Sarazu is quiet, keeps to herself, does what she's told, and in between pursues scientific interests that have nothing to do with her employment at SEMME. In science, she's a lot more competent than her predecessor.
Outside of science, Dina's a fish out of water. Social interaction is mostly a mystery to her, and she's never had many friends. Other people often leave her dumbfounded. She rarely causes harm or commotion, however; she's too busy staring blankly at what goes on around her, and being an atheist. Which is why Joyce thinks she went to Hell. (but she didn't)
History
An abductee of the Head Alien, Dina was one of the many new employees after Year Zero. Dina ended up employed at SEMME after a roundabout chain of unlikely post-graduate recruitments. She replaced the departed Walkerton as Professor Doc's assistant, much to the relief of everyone involved.
After Joyce tried to Mind-wipe herself again, Dina ended up dating Walkerton. She took a real possessive liking to him, initially fascinated with his laidback attitude. She'd not really garnered that much attention to herself before, and Walkerton is perhaps the only guy that has ever spoken to her in more-than-business terms. It was hoped that she would be a calming influence for Walkerton, but this didn't happen. Over time, she became aware that Walkerton still held feelings for Joyce, and she began a small campaign to drive a wedge between them.
During the Great Big Sea storyline she joined Squadron 128 at the Martian Embassy in order to avoid Joyce rejoining the group. When the resurrection chambers of Sal's parents fell through the ceiling, she was saved by Sal, leading to the death instead of Big Boss.
Over time, Walky's childish abrasiveness and lack of public composure began to wear down Dina's adoration of him. This, coupled with the knowledge of one of Walky's dark secrets forged a gap between the two that eventually separated them.
After her break with Walky, Mike was her only real social interaction. She had several attempts at being more than just friends with him. At one point, she kept him continually drunk, but all eventually ended in disaster -- the last of which embittered Walky heavily towards Mike. These feelings culminated in Walky's violent physical attack on Mike when Dina sacrificed herself to protect SEMME during the attack by JFO.
After death, Dina reappeared in "purgatory" when Walky died. Since Walky commented that her coffin was empty because there wasn't anything left after the explosion to bury, there can be no attempt to resurrect her, unless some remains (hair, etc) were left intact in her quarters after the JFO/Martian attack - or if some of the blood/etc scattered around the glass steel room where she died was saved, given the means of Walky's resurrection.
Trivia
- Dina's name is a really ridiculous pun. She likes dinosaurs, so her name is Dina. And "Sarazu" sounds kind of like "saurus" but way more Japaneezy. That's goddamn genius, right there.
- Dina was never seen without her hat, not even while sleeping, until a moment before her death.
- Shortly following the Fans! crossover, when SEMME attempts to investigate the source of the original interdimensional breach, Dina tracks it down to Belgium. She is, however, quickly ignored when Joe comes up with the more likely London,[1] dealing yet another blow to her self-esteem. It is later revealed (after her death) that she had actually detected the JFO's decoy portal.[2]
